Training Seminar “Theoretical and Practical Aspects on the Legal Protection of New Plant Varieties”

On November 26, 2014, in the conference hall of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) was held the training seminar entitled “Theoretical and Practical Aspects on the Legal Protection of New Plant Varieties”. The action was part of the series of training seminars in the field of intellectual property for managers and representatives of institutions in the sphere of science and innovation, organized by AGEPI.

Among the participants were representatives of the State Commission for Variety Testing of the Republic of Moldova, Institute of Crops Production “Porumbeni”, Institute of Horticulture and Food Technology, Institute of Genetics, Physiology and Plant Protection, Botanical Garden, etc.

The seminar was opened by Svetlana Munteanu, Deputy Director General of AGEPI, who urged participants to benefit from the information provided by the AGEPI specialists in this seminar and to more effectively use all the possibilities offered by national IP system.

The meeting aimed at schooling representatives of the institutions in the sphere of science and innovation working in the field of development and improvement of plant varieties on the national and international legislation in the field of legal protection of new plant varieties. Also, breeders were familiarized with the practical aspects related to the enforcement of rights on new plant varieties, as well as the development of practical skills on the procedure of plant variety patent application document drafting, search in the national and international information sources in the given field.

In particular, Ala Gusan, Director of Inventions and Plant Varieties Department of AGEPI, and Dr. Aurelia Lupan, Senior Specialist, Agro-Industrial Techniques Division, AGEPI, presented the reports “Developing and Ensuring Enforcement of Rights Conferred by a Plant Variety Patent” and “Patent Protection of New Plant Varieties”.

We should mention that said event fits into the list of activities carried out by AGEPI in order to increase the level of training and continuous upgrading of the national staff in the field of intellectual property, in accordance with the strategic objectives set by the National Intellectual Property Strategy until 2020 and the Action Plan for 2012-2014 on Implementation of the National Strategy mentioned, approved by Government Decision no. 880 of 22.11.2012.
