On 15 June this year, the meeting of the Commission for examination of applications for the grant of permission to use the official or historical name of the state in the product and/or service trademark as well as in its industrial design was held at the Ministry of Economy. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Commission, Octavian Calmic, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy.

The Commission met to examine 14 requests for use of the State’s name in the composition of trademarks submitted to the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI). Five requests have been submitted for trademarks under the renewal procedure, which have been used in the Republic of Moldova for more than 10 years, the others refer to the trademarks to be registered.

As a result of the examination, all applicants received approval to use the proposed trademarks.

The areas of activity provided by applicants are diverse, such as public catering, education, training, entertainment, production of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, information and advertising services, legal services, etc.

In accordance with current legislation, trademarks containing the official or historical name of a State may be registered only with the consent of the Commission for examination of applications for the grant of permission to use the official or historical name of the state in the product and/or service trademark, and in its industrial design.

In order to obtain the respective permission, the applicant must submit a request to the Commission in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations on the Mode and Conditions for Granting Permission to Use the Official or Historical Name of the State in the Product and/or Service Trademark, and in Its Industrial Design (http://lex.justice.md/index.php?action=view&view=doc&lang=1&id=295821).
