Starting with July 25, this year, 10 geographical indications (GIs) from the Republic of Moldova are officially recognized and protected in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, under the Strategic Partnership, Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the two states.

This development was made possible by Decision No 1/2025 of the Geographical Indications Sub-Committee, adopted on July 18, 2025. Following that decision, the following products benefit from protection on the territory of the United Kingdom, through the geographical indications system: Agriş de Marinici (Marinici Gooseberry), Brânză de Măgura (Măgura Cheese); Brânză de Popeasca (Popeasca Cheese), Kaurmaua de Bugeac (Bugeac Kaurma), Miere din Codrii Moldovei (Honey from Codrii Moldovei), Pistil de Valea Răutului (Fruit Paste of Valea Răutului), Prune Deosebite de Lalova (Special Plums of lalova), Ceai de Plante Zăbriceni (Zăbriceni Herbal Tea), Digestiv Nistrean (Dniester Digestif), and also the wine with protected designation of origin Dealul Craveţ.

Thus, the total number of Moldovan geographical indications protected in the United Kingdom reaches 18, covering local agri-food products that reflect Moldovan traditions.

Equally, consumers in the Republic of Moldova benefit from better information and a guarantee of the authenticity of quality British products with local specificity. The United Kingdom has added 10 new products to the 70 British geographical indications (GIs) already protected. Products such as Single Malt Whiskey of Wales, Sussex Wine and Welsh Leeks now benefit from official protection on the territory of the Republic of Moldova

The expansion of the list of geographical indications contributes to:

• promoting traditional values and the quality of local products;
• better protection against counterfeiting;
• supporting local producers through increased access to international markets;

By obtaining protection for these geographical indications, bilateral trade relations are strengthened and the effort of producers from the Republic of Moldova to confidently enter new markets is supported.
