Intellectual Property will be studied in the High Schools of the Republic of Moldova

A new discipline will be studied starting from autumn in the high schools of the Republic of Moldova. Optionally, pupils will be able to learn about the field of intellectual property.

The curriculum for the optional course “Introduction to Intellectual Property” has been examined by the National Council for Curriculum and approved by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova.

The curriculum was initiated by the State Agency on Intellectual Property in 2016 and was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova on the basis of the Cooperation Agreement between the two institutions signed on April 26, 2016.

The aim of the discipline is to promote knowledge in the field of intellectual property among pupils in the educational institutions of the Republic of Moldova, to develop practical skills in the field, and also to raise pupils’ awareness of the importance of the need for respecting intellectual property rights and the negative impact of counterfeiting and piracy phenomena.

The optional course “Introduction to Intellectual Property” falls within the curriculum area of socio-humanistic education and is dedicated to the 9th-12th grades, real and humanist profile, with a total of 34 hours per year.

During the course pupils will be able to study about the concept of intellectual property; the industrial property objects and the principles of their protection; the objects of copyright and related rights; the administration and exploitation of intellectual property, as well as about respecting intellectual property rights and combating counterfeiting and piracy.

Pupils who wish to study the course “Introduction to Intellectual Property”, in the study years 2017-2018, will have to choose this discipline from the list of optional hours approved by the National Council for Curriculum and published on the website of the Ministry of Education. The offer of optional courses will be proposed to pupils in May.

The State Agency on Intellectual Property together with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova will organize training and refresher courses for teachers who will teach this optional discipline in high schools.
