The State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) organized on November 17, 2021, the International Conference entitled “Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Intellectual Property”. The event was held with the support of the Project “Fostering Innovations in the Danube Region through Knowledge Engineering and IPR Management - KnowING IPR”, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Given the epidemiological situation generated by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the event took place in online format.
The event brought together about 100 international and local experts and practitioners, including specialists from national intellectual property offices, representatives of institutions and organizations working in the field of research, innovation and higher education, residents of scientific-technological parks and innovative incubators, experts in the field of intellectual property, as well as representatives of the business environment.
In the opening of the conference, the Director General of AGEPI, Eugeniu Rusu, mentioned that: “The accelerated pace in which the sphere of technologies develops makes us or, for some, forces us to keep pace with this informational explosion. Smartphones, search engines, translation applications, certain car functions - all are based on artificial intelligence (AI). The large number of participants in the conference once again certifies the importance of the discussed topic. We want everyone at the end of this webinar to be left with positive impressions, to explore curious details and to know the interdependence between Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Intellectual Property.”
Virag Halgand, WIPO’s Department for Transition and Developed Countries, stressed that the event will answer a number of questions about the impact of AI technologies on innovation and creativity. “Artificial intelligence presents a new digital frontier, with a profound impact on the world. It will have technological, economic and social consequences. Our goal is to encourage cooperation in the development and implementation of AI applications for the administration of the intellectual property system,” added the WIPO representative.
In his turn, Heli Pihlajamaa, Director of Patent Law at the EPO, stated in the opening of the conference that: “The theme of this event is more than important. Artificial intelligence has an impact on the intellectual property system, as it is already used to create products, inventions or even copyrights. Thus, it is our duty to be connected to the latest trends and to be able to avoid from the start any difficulty that may arise along the way.”
In its fifth edition, the Conference focused on the role and impact of artificial intelligence on the innovation process and the intellectual property system. International experts from WIPO, EPO, EUIPO and the KnowING IPR Project addressed the latest trends in the field, presenting the potential of AI for improving IP services and increasing the quality of intellectual property data.
The Innovation Conference is part of the program of related events held within the framework of the International Specialized Exhibition “INFOINVENT-2021”, which takes place online, from 17 to 20 November 2021.
