The State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) hosted from 4 to 8 May 2026 the documentation mission of the European expert in the field of geographical indications (GI), Dariusz Goszczyński, from Poland. The activity was organized with the support of the Moldovan-Swiss Project Swiss PartnershIP Moldova.
The visit took place in the context of the new draft law on geographical indications, traditional specialities guaranteed and optional quality terms, developed to strengthen the national normative framework and harmonize it with the legislation of the European Union, in order to ensure increased protection for domestic products.
During the mission, the European expert held a series of working meetings and technical consultations with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) and the National Accreditation Center of the Republic of Moldova (MOLDAC).
The discussions focused on the mechanisms necessary for the implementation of the new legislation, strengthening of institutional cooperation, identification of administrative and technical needs, as well as taking over of best European practices in the field of geographical indications.
The documentation mission aimed to initiate the process of developing subsidiary normative acts to the new law, by assessing the existing institutional framework and formulating the necessary recommendations to ensure an efficient system of protection, administration and exploitation of products with geographical indications.
Geographical indications represent an important tool for promoting local products with added value, contributing to local economic development, protecting traditional heritage and increasing the competitiveness of Moldovan products on national and international markets.
The Draft Law on Geographical Indications, Traditional Specialties Guaranteed and Optional Quality Terms was approved by the Government on April 1, 2026 and adopted in the first reading by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on April 24, 2026.
