The Role of Intellectual Property and Innovations, Discussed within the Framework of an International Conference

The 4th edition of the International Innovation Conference was held in the period 20-21 November, in Chisinau, with the main title “Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development”. The event was organized by the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI), in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.

The event was attended by representatives of WIPO, the European Patent Office (EPO), the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), as well as representatives of the intellectual property offices in Romania, Estonia, Poland and Hungary. At the Innovation Conference were also present representatives of institutions and organizations active in the field of research, innovation and higher education of the Republic of Moldova, residents of the scientific-technological parks and innovative incubators, experts in the field of intellectual property, as well as representatives of the business environment.

In the opening of the conference, AGEPI Interim Director General Andrei Popa mentioned that the purpose of this event is to support and promote the role of innovations in society, to develop regional and international scientific-technical cooperation and to encourage business-science partnerships. “The main impact on development takes place through innovation and cultural and creative production. These, of course, are the reasons why intellectual property exists. This event will answer a series of questions regarding the role of intellectual property and innovations in increasing competitiveness, promoting sustainable industrialization and stimulating the implementation of clean and environmentally friendly technologies. The key issues of intellectual property related to sustainable development will also be examined, focused on the trends and challenges in the field at international level”, stressed Andrei Popa.

Further, Yoshiyuki Takagi, Assistant Director General, Global Infrastructure Sector, World Intellectual Property Organization, specified that this conference will highlight strategies for exploiting development-oriented innovation and intellectual property policies.

At the same time, Nichogiannopoulou Aliki, Head of Operations, European and International Cooperation Directorate, EPO specified that this conference is a great opportunity for international experts to listen to the vision of colleagues in the Republic of Moldova and also to talk about how the European Patent Office could cooperate with our country to support innovations.

During the four thematic sessions of the conference, various aspects on the role of intellectual property and innovations in enhancing the competitiveness of industries and services were discussed and highlighted. Case studies were presented in this area, which resulted in the promotion of certain competitive products and services on the market, which improve the quality of life of citizens.

Topics related to the role of intellectual property offices and other institutions in disseminating and exchanging patent information, promoting the use of intellectual property in order to raise awareness of different categories of citizens, stimulating creativity and forming an active innovative behavior of entrepreneurs, developing and implementing training programs for young entrepreneurs and managers in order to build an innovative culture and a mature innovation environment in society, etc., were also promoted.

Particular attention was paid to the theoretical and practical aspects of the role of innovations in enhancing the competitiveness of some areas of the national economy, including the eco-energy sector and information technology, etc.

The participants in the international innovation conference also discussed about the role of intellectual property and innovations, including geographical indications and appellations of origin, in local and regional development and job creation, national and regional development strategy and effective use of the intellectual property system in protecting and promoting intellectual property objects and improving the quality of life.

The event was part of the program of events organized during the Week of the International Specialized Exhibition “INFOINVENT”, 16th edition, which takes place from 20 to 23November, at Moldexpo.
