United States Trade Representative Delegation on a Visit to AGEPI

A delegation of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), headed by Ms. Elizabeth Hafner, Deputy Assistant for Europe and the Middle East of the U.S. Trade Representative, had on May 28, this year, a meeting with representatives of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) to document with the latest developments in the field of intellectual property in the Republic of Moldova, he discussions being focused in particular on the enforcement for intellectual property rights (IPR) and the role of AGEPI on this dimension.

During the meeting, the US delegation was informed about the legislation and the mechanism of IPR enforcement in the Republic of Moldova, the powers of the Intellectual Property Office and the intellectual property rights enforcement bodies, as well as the cooperation relations between these actors in order to combat the phenomenon counterfeiting and piracy in the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, discussions were held on the information presented in the National Report on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights for 2018, especially the aspects related to the border action mode in cases of violation of IPRs and the initiatives of the Republic of Moldova to strengthen the intellectual property rights enforcement mechanism by implementing an information system for data exchange between authorities with competencies in the field of intellectual property.

Finally, the parties present at the meeting reiterated the interest in maintaining and consolidating cooperation relations on the intellectual property segment, emphasizing its importance in the economic and technological development of both countries.

We should mention that the USTR delegation was on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova, in the framework of which it had a series of meetings with officials of the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, and also with some public agencies and institutions responsible for the management of the economic and financial sector of the Republic of Moldova.
