Meeting of Moldova-EU Association Committee in Trade Configuration was held in Brussels

The second meeting of the Republic of Moldova-European Union Association Committee in Trade Configuration was held on 19 October in Brussels, in the framework of which were evaluated the institutional capacities of the Republic of Moldova in terms of realization of commitments undertaken under the Association Agreement, but also examined the assistance needs/projects in the coverage areas of the document economic component. A Moldovan delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Octavian Calmic, Minister of Economy presented the progress report on action taken on the main areas referred to in Title V of the Association Agreement.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Octavian Calmic, presented the developments in the components pillar underpinning the creation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area: the dynamics of foreign trade of the Republic of Moldova, with emphasis on trade developments with European partners, including recovery of export quotas/import, harmonization of national legislation with the acquis communautaire on IPR, public procurement, trade in services, quality infrastructure and market surveillance, etc.

In this context, the Minister of Economy emphasized that the European Union remains the main trading partner of Moldova, and approximately 1,250 national companies (up to 20% compared to 2013) recorded exports in the European community states for 673 tariff positions, which is cumulative to over 67% of all our country’s exporters.

In his report, Deputy Prime Minister referred to both the most important achievements in trade with services, energy sector, public procurement, intellectual property rights, competition, etc, and the problems faced by national authorities to implement goals undertaken under the Association Agreement.

In turn, Petros Sourmelis, head of the Unit on issues of EU neighborhood trade policy, appreciated the efforts of the Moldovan Government in adjusting national legislation to the EU and in achieving implementation of the commitments undertaken by our country under the Association Agreement and implementation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. In particular, EU officials welcomed progress in transposition and implementation of the national community standards, quality infrastructure, public procurement strategy approval, capacity strengthening in the financial-banking sector, etc.

State Agency on Intellectual Property was represented in the said meeting by Liliana Vieru, Head of International Cooperation and European Integration Department, who, in accordance with par. 6 of the Agenda, presented a brief information with respect to the progress recorder by Moldova in implementation of the commitments set out in Chapter 9 “Intellectual Property Rights” of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.

During the meeting, there were signed several important decisions regarding updating of certain annexes, component part of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.
